Erik Barrios-Recendez (b. 1988), via collage, creates colorful dissonance digesting imagery from archives, pop culture, and personal memorabilia that devolves into an incorporial brew. Barrios-Recendez often works exploring the passage of time, the preservation of memory, and the confrontation of cultural erasure. As a first-generation Mexican American queer artist, Erik had to code-switch to navigate the world, and in his work, part diary and part alien, he also code-switches. Fusing imagery, impulsively hybridizing, and intuitively creating intersections that form beautiful monstrosity, Erik speaks of community.
